Legal Advocacy

“A report prepared by the International Commission of Jurists has documented the persecution faced by the affected community due to the operation of Section 377 … the report documents instances of abuse from law enforcement agencies and how the possibility of persecution under Section 377 prevents redress.”

Supreme Court of India citation of a report co-authored by me, in its judgment decriminalising homosexuality in India in 2018.

The public-facing elements of my research have emerged in conversation with communities and through collaborating with researchers across disciplines. My experience with the Alternative Law Forum and the International Commission of Jurists has generated a number of reports that have found their way into judicial decisions and legislative interventions. Other advocacy materials such as The Free Speech Journal below have been developed in collaboration with designers in order to reach a broader range of audiences. I’ve also had the chance to conduct workshops and training sessions for grassroots organizations, often translating complex legal mechanisms into accessible, practical information.

Coming Up ….

I’m interested in bringing some of my theatrical training to bear on public advocacy and engagement. I’m inspired by the work that the Peninsula Community Legal Centre has conducted recently in relation to reducing family violence through education for young people through the use of community legal education.
